FEECS Celebrates 35 Years with a Ceremonial Meeting of its Scientific Board

The Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science at VSB – Technical University of Ostrava marked 35 years since its establishment. The anniversary was celebrated on 10 September with a ceremonial meeting of the FEECS Scientific Board, honouring individuals who have contributed to the Faculty’s development and reflecting on its history, present achievements and future direction.

The ceremonial meeting brought together representatives of the VSB-TUO leadership, members of the FEECS Scientific Board, representatives of partner universities from the Czech Republic and abroad, and other distinguished guests.

The opening address was delivered by VSB-TUO Rector Igor Ivan. He reflected on the Faculty’s history, highlighted its significant recent achievements and emphasised the important role of FEECS in the further development of the University.

He was followed by Radek Martinek, Dean of the Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science. “Thirty-five years is an opportunity to look back at what we have managed to build at the Faculty, but above all to thank the people who have made this development possible. FEECS has changed significantly over the years, successfully responding to technological advances, and today it is active in a number of fields that will have a major impact on our future. Bringing electrical engineering and computer science together under one roof is now one of our greatest strengths,” said Dean Radek Martinek.
An important part of the ceremonial meeting was the presentation of decrees and FEECS commemorative medals to individuals who have made significant contributions to the development of the Faculty, its academic disciplines, education, research and international cooperation.

The awards symbolically connected the Faculty’s history, present and international dimension. Commemorative medals were presented to former deans who led FEECS through different stages of its development, distinguished individuals who contributed to the advancement of its academic disciplines, education and research, as well as current members of the Faculty leadership who have made a long-standing contribution to its operation and development. Representatives of Ton Duc Thang University in Vietnam were also honoured for their long-term contribution to Czech-Vietnamese academic, educational and research cooperation.

In his closing remarks, Dean Radek Martinek once again thanked all those honoured as well as everyone who has contributed to building the Faculty over the past decades. “The history of the Faculty is not shaped solely by dates, buildings and achievements. It is shaped by people. Our thirty-fifth anniversary is therefore not simply an opportunity to look back. It is not a full stop. It is a colon. What follows is the next chapter in the story of a Faculty that connects electrical engineering with computer science, Ostrava with the world, and scientific excellence with humanity,” concluded Dean Radek Martinek.

Following the ceremonial meeting, the programme continued with an informal gathering, providing guests with an opportunity for personal conversations and further discussion. The programme also included demonstrations of drone technologies and guided tours of selected laboratories at the Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science and the CPIT TL3 Testbed.

FEECS After 35 Years
The independent Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science was established on 1 January 1991 following the division of the former Faculty of Mechanical and Electrical Engineering. Over its 35-year history, the Faculty has undergone significant development and is now one of the largest faculties at VSB-TUO, with more than 3,000 students and over 340 employees.

The Faculty’s areas of education and research have also evolved considerably. Alongside electrical engineering and computer science, its activities now encompass artificial intelligence, robotics, cybersecurity, modern energy systems, biomedical technologies, photonics, autonomous mobility and Industry 4.0 technologies. Cooperation with industry and with universities and research institutions abroad also plays an important role in the continued development of FEECS
