“Esports has a long tradition at VŠB-TUO, and the match against the University of Ostrava was a great opportunity to bring the two university communities together. We are delighted that we managed to create the atmosphere of a true derby – and, of course, we are also very pleased with the overall victory,” says Jakub Čubík from the Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science at VŠB-TUO on behalf of the organisers.

Esports Derby Kicks Off Derby Week
This year marked the first direct esports clash between Ostrava’s two universities and symbolically kicked off Derby Week. The rivalry between VŠB-TUO and the University of Ostrava continues on 8 October, when the two universities will face each other in the 13th Ostrava University Ice Hockey Derby.
There is also an interesting connection between the two events through NHL players Adam Havel and Vojtěch Tomsa. After representing their universities in virtual ice hockey, just three days later they will face each other again – this time as members of their respective university ice hockey teams on the ice at Ostravar Arena.
Ten Years of Esports at VŠB-TUO
Esports has a ten-year tradition at VŠB-TUO. Its history dates back to 2016, when the ESPORT VŠB-TUO OSTRAVA LEAGUE was established, gradually building one of the most prominent university esports communities in the Czech Republic.
In 2018, the Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science opened the first university esports classroom in the Czech Republic. Esports subsequently became part of the university’s teaching activities, while VŠB-TUO students began regularly representing the university in national and international competitions.
