A student organization called Dron LAB has been established at VŠB-TUO. Interested students can get involved in drone development

Design, build, and program your own drones; test autonomous systems; and put your skills to the test in international competitions. These are the opportunities offered by the student organization Dron LAB. Other students who are eager to learn new things and contribute to drone development are also welcome to join the team.

Dron LAB focuses on the development of competition-grade and experimental unmanned aerial vehicles. Here, students combine their knowledge of cybernetics, electrical engineering, computer science, mechanical engineering, and the natural sciences. They participate in the design and construction of drones, the development of control algorithms, the integration of sensors, and the testing of individual systems.
“We want to offer students a space where they can develop their ideas and gain experience that they often don’t get in regular classes. Dron LAB isn’t just about flying drones. Students learn to design and assemble an entire system, program it, solve technical problems, and collaborate as a team. Importantly, they can try everything out for themselves in practice. We’d like to bring together people from different fields, because that’s often how the most interesting ideas emerge. “One person might develop an autonomous system, while another comes up with a question about how to use it, for example, in environmental research or medicine,” says Radovan Hájovský, head of Dron LAB at the Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science at VŠB-TUO.

From Original Design to International Competitions
A significant part of Dron LAB’s activities involves participating in international unmanned aerial vehicle competitions, such as the UAV Contest. Competition tasks test the drones’ capabilities in autonomous flight, precise navigation, object detection, and the execution of complex missions. This allows students to test their solutions in practice, compare them with teams from other universities, and gain experience in developing complex autonomous systems. At the same time, the competitions require the ability to respond to unexpected situations, find viable technical solutions, and collaborate under time pressure.

Other students are also welcome to join

Dron LAB is open to students interested in the practical application of drones, robotics, autonomous systems, and modern technologies. It offers opportunities for those interested in programming, electronics, mechanical design, data processing, and practical testing.
The organization brings together students from various technical fields and allows them to learn from more experienced peers and faculty members. In addition to gaining technical expertise, they also develop skills in teamwork, independent problem-solving, and the organization of technical projects.
The student organization utilizes the specialized facilities of the university-wide Dron LAB, which connects the Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering, and the Faculty of Mining and Geology at VŠB-TUO.
