Summary
Time reversal (TR) of acoustic and ultrasonic signals became an efficient tool in various scientific fields including nondestructive evaluation of materials and structures. TR procedure allows focusing of elastic waves in time and space, and precise localization and reconstruction of original signal sources even in highly inhomogeneous and dispersive media. The proposed project will examine conditions influencing TR use in two ultrasonic nondestructive testing methods: acoustic emission and nonlinear elastic wave spectroscopy. Influencing factors will be investigated experimentally on metallic and composite material samples. Experiments will be accompanied with paralleled large-scale numerical simulations of wave propagation, which will support better understanding to observed effects and signal processing design. The final goal is to transfer detected ultrasonic signals from a real structure onto its physical and/or computational models, where the thorough analysis is much easier.
