The NetCom project aims to design new generation networks, such as S-PON (Super-PON), which can increase the scalability and deployment of xPON for access networks. In 2008, a group was created under the IEEE 802.3 Working Group as P802.3cs, which continues to develop this concept under the banner of an international organization, in addition to ITU-T Q2/SG15. This is a development milestone in the field of xPON, and it is based on already established types of xPON networks. The basic attributes of the previous types of PON networks are combined here. Still, with the fact, the new S-PON architecture tries to achieve a range of up to 50 km with customer coverage of up to 1024 end units within a passive optical distribution network. To achieve such a large coverage of subscribers within the S-PON network, it is necessary to use a suitable wave plan for all end customers/units. For this, integrated waveguide optic elements based on the AWG are used, especially C-AWG (Cyclic AWG) or A-AWG (Athermal AWG) if part of the network is installed in outdoor environments. By choosing the right wave plan, we can cover the channel spacing at 100 GHz within the C and L optical bands and achieve coexistence with other types of networks, such as XGS-PON/NGPON.
